Tell us a little about your business.
Skin Theorist is a lifestyle brand that manifested to make non-toxic luxury skincare inclusive, representative and accessible. Exclusive cult-beauty is not our thing.
What is the change that you would like to bring to the world?
1. Humans honouring their raw skin and feeling like their skin is deserving of nothing less than non-toxic luxury skincare.
2. Women, men and children feeling empowered to control ingredients that come into contact with their skin by formulating their own skincare.
What drove you to start your business?
1. Non-toxic luxury skincare/beauty is over-priced and exclusive.
2. Women/Men of colour are not represented in eco-luxe or green beauty communities.
Has anything changed since you started?
When we analyzed our skin attitude survey findings... it's implications started to sink in and our plans for launching with a capsule collection had to take the back seat. Sparking radical shifts in negative skin attitude has now become our priority. We're beginning by filming a short film/documentary that unpacks the many chapters of the human experience of living in skin. On Women's Day, we'd love to hear women and men sharing their skin stories with hashtag #skintheorist. We need to know, "What has life been like walking in your skin?" Surface skin concerns that document our life with stretch marks, inflammation, scars and fine lines are equally as important as our skin chapters that dive deeper into our emotions, childhood, relationships and experiences.
How do you think being a woman of colour has impacted your journey?
Women of colour aren't represented well in the cult-like green beauty industry. Without representation, how are we supposed to know to demand better ingredients in our beauty jars, bottles, tubes and palettes?
Have you had a remarkable breakthrough or a win that you would like to share with our readers?
We recently filmed our first segment where women and men in their 20's and 30's with seemingly perfect skin stories came together to share their perfectly "imperfect" skin stories. We structured our film day as a content collab experience. The experience allowed brands and creative humans to co-construct mutually beneficial content. We ate well-styled nutritious food, took movement/meditation breaks and had a blast improvising, designing, directing and creating together.
