Tell us a little about your business. What is it about?
Kahmune is online marketplace for skin tone footwear and accessories.
What is the change that you would like to bring to society?
The fashion and beauty industries have spent decades isolating women of colour, particularly women with darker complexions. The term "nude," one that by definition means naked sadly doesn't apply to all of us. I want to bring some much needed attention to the fact that all women deserve to have their skin tones acknowledged.
What happened to make you want to do this? Tell us what drove you to start this.
I came across Kim Kardashian in a full "nude" outfit and fell in love with it. I wanted to emulate the look but quickly realized her nude and my nude are not the same yet there were a plethora of options for her complexion and very few for mine. It was in that moment that I decided to change that.
Has anything changed since you started?
I feel like I started my brand at the perfect time. There's been lots of discussion around the ideas of diversity and inclusion and how the fashion and beauty industries can be better. With the success of brands like font beauty I think it's inevitable that the industries realize they have to change.
How do you think being a woman of colour has impacted your journey?
It's personal. It's one thing to be passionate about a cause and I feel it's another for that passion to come from personal experience. I think being a woman of colour after change is what drives me the most.
